The Dubai Metro is a practical airport transfer if you arrive at DXB Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, reach the station while trains are running and have no more than two permitted bags per person. Terminal 2 has no direct Metro station. For a late arrival, check the last train from your terminal—not simply the network’s closing time—and allow for immigration and baggage reclaim.

Which DXB terminals have a Metro station?

Arrival terminal Metro access Best next step
Terminal 1 Direct access to Airport Terminal 1 station on the Red Line Follow Metro signs after customs
Terminal 3 Direct access to Airport Terminal 3 station on the Red Line Follow Metro signs after customs
Terminal 2 No direct Metro station Use an RTA bus or taxi rather than planning to walk to the rail network

Dubai Airports lists Red Line connections at Terminals 1 and 3, with ticket offices and vending machines at both airport Metro stations. Its bus guidance says buses leave from arrivals at all three terminals, including Terminal 2 (Dubai Airports Metro guide; Dubai Airports bus guide).

Check the terminal on the airline’s arrival information before planning the transfer. Terminal 2 passengers can use a bus, but buses require a nol card and do not accept cash. With several bags, children or a hotel well away from a stop, a taxi may be simpler.

Which train goes into the city?

From Airport Terminal 3 or Airport Terminal 1, take a Red Line train away from centrepoint, toward Expo 2020 or Life Pharmacy. Both services follow the same city corridor through Deira, Bur Dubai, Downtown Dubai and Dubai Marina before separating after National Paints. If travelling beyond that split, check the train’s destination display.

Useful direct stops include:

  • Deira: City Centre Deira, Al Rigga and Union
  • Bur Dubai: BurJuman; change there to the Green Line for Sharaf DG or Al Ghubaiba
  • Downtown Dubai: Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall
  • Dubai Marina: SOBHA REALTY or DMCC; both connect with the Dubai Tram

Union and BurJuman are Red–Green interchange stations, while SOBHA REALTY and DMCC connect Metro and Tram, according to the RTA timetable and interchange guide. Check the nearest station to the hotel rather than relying on the neighborhood name: Downtown and Dubai Marina both extend beyond the immediate station exits.

How late does the airport Metro run?

RTA publishes these general station opening hours:

  • Monday–Thursday: 5am–midnight
  • Friday: 5am–1am the following day
  • Saturday: 5am–midnight
  • Sunday: 8am–midnight

Those are station hours, not a promise of a departure from the airport at closing time. In RTA’s regular timetable dated 25 September 2026, the latest listed citybound departures for destinations on the shared corridor through DMCC—the later of the Expo 2020 and Life Pharmacy services—are:

Day Terminal 3 Terminal 1
Monday–Thursday 10:56pm 10:58pm
Friday 11:56pm 11:58pm
Saturday 10:56pm 10:58pm
Sunday 10:55pm 10:57pm

These times come from the RTA detailed Metro timetable. A destination beyond National Paints may require an earlier branch-specific train. Public-holiday and special-event schedules can also differ.

A flight’s landing time is not the time you reach the platform. Immigration, baggage delivery, customs, the walk to the station and buying a ticket all come first. If the margin is tight, check the current departure in RTA’s journey planner or S’hail app after landing.

If the last train has gone, Dubai Taxi Company taxis operate 24/7 at designated ranks in each terminal. The airport starting fare is AED 25, followed by distance-based charges (Dubai Airports taxi guide). For early arrivals, note that regular Sunday Metro service starts at 8am rather than 5am.

Can you take suitcases on the Metro?

Yes, within a two-piece allowance per passenger:

  • One large suitcase: no more than 81 × 58 × 30cm
  • One small suitcase: no more than 55 × 38 × 20cm

RTA says all luggage must be placed in the dedicated luggage area in each cabin (RTA Metro baggage policy). The allowance is not two full-size checked suitcases plus hand luggage; it is one large and one small suitcase in total.

Consider a taxi if one passenger has more than two pieces, an oversized case or luggage that will be difficult to control. Metro stations have lift access at all levels, but that does not make every hotel a short, step-free walk from the exit.

Check the cabin markings before boarding. Trains have general cabins, a Gold cabin for Gold-class fares, and cabins designated for women and children.

Buying the right nol ticket at the airport

You cannot pay a Metro fare with cash at the gate. Buy a nol product from the ticket office or vending machine, then tap in and tap out.

For most visitors choosing between the basic options:

  • A Red Ticket works for occasional individual journeys. A regular trip costs AED 4, AED 6 or AED 8.50, depending on the zones crossed.
  • A Silver Card costs AED 25, including AED 19 of stored value. Its corresponding fares are AED 3, AED 5 and AED 7.50, making it more useful if you expect to keep using public transport.

RTA calculates fares by zones; there is no separate airport surcharge in its fare table (RTA nol fares). A stored-value nol card needs at least AED 7.50 for check-in. Tap out so the system can calculate the correct fare (RTA nol instructions).

The practical decision

Use the Metro when you arrive at Terminal 1 or 3 with enough time before the last train, your luggage meets the limit and your destination is reasonably close to a station. It is particularly direct for hotels around Al Rigga, BurJuman, Sheikh Zayed Road, Downtown and the rail-served side of Dubai Marina.

From Terminal 2, plan on a bus or taxi. From any terminal, a taxi is the more practical choice when the last-train margin is narrow, the group has several large bags or the final station-to-hotel leg would remove the convenience of using the Metro.
